It was touted as the Big Dig’s greatest open-space gift to Boston: a spectacular ribbon of parks, paths, and pedestrian footbridges linking the Esplanade to both the Rose Kennedy Greenway and Boston Harbor. But when the Central Artery/Tunnel Project officially wrapped up two years ago, only half of what was promised had been built.

Cheerleaders and event volunteers lined the sidewalks of the Esplanade in Boston last Sunday as more than 40,000 walkers finished the 5.7-mile course in the annual American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.

A woman was attacked and robbed while walking along the Charles River Esplanade early yesterday morning, under conditions alarmingly similar to past attacks in the same area, in what may be the work of the same assailant, authorities said.
